Self Help Books I Live By

Since Asians love disclaimers (where else in the world would they put a sign at the car park with "park at your own risk" and charge you for it? what if it's their own staffs who broke into your car? is it even legally binding?) so I'm putting a disclaimer here that I don't really live by what's preached in the books 100%, but I just find them practical and making sense to me better than the other best selling self help books out there.

BOOK 1

This is the very first self help book I ever bought back in 2007. It has a lot of practical tips in improving your communication skills. It helps in developing ease in social situations. Just to quote what's written from Amazon  website:

Leil Lowndes' How to Talk to Anyone offers 101 time-tested hints, tips, and techniques for confidently communicating with others. A bestselling author and renowned communications consultant, Lowndes focuses on ice-breaking skills and communication techniques that are proven successful when making a positive first impression, establishing instant rapport and credibility, and more.
Packed with basic, no-nonsense advice and solid research evidence about which techniques work best in which areas, How to Talk to Anyone show readers how to:
  1. Make small talk not so small
  2. Use body language to captivate an audience
  3. Look like you know what you're talking about--even when you don't
The book is easy and fun to read. There's also a section on how to talk to your loved ones, which I didn't really finish, hence explaining why I'm such a failure so far. ;P

BOOK 2

The Law of Attraction is a metaphysical New Thought belief that "like attracts like”, that positive and negative thinking bring about positive and negative physical results, respectively. According to the Law of Attraction, the phrase "I need more money" allows the subject to continue to "need more money". If the subject wants to change this they would focus their thoughts on the goal (having more money) rather than the problem (needing more money). This might take the form of phrases such as "I will make more money" or "I will find a job that pays very well". (from Wikipedia)

This book is all about positive thinking. You're not even supposed to write about that guy from hell that you went on a blind date with in your secret, personal diary. But of course, once in a while, you can't help but whine about it. I would suggest to go talk about it to a friend/confidante rather than writing it down. That way, you don't have a lingering written reminder of that negative thing.

BOOK 3

Who else but the guru himself? I love reading his books, but you have to be in a certain state of mind to read and absorb every word as it is not exactly leisure reading. So, I bought this book instead. If I'm in need of some inspirations, I will just flip the pages to look for a relevant one. For how I'm feeling right now, it would be:

"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."  - The Alchemist

"Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own."  - The Alchemist

"When someone leaves, it's because someone else is about to arrive." - The Zahir

"There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them.
But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there."  - The Fifth Mountain

"if pain must come, may it come quickly. because i have a life to live, and i need to live it in the best possible. if he has to make a choice, may he make it now. then i will either wait for him or forget him. waiting is painful. forgetting is painful. but not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering."

Alright, I'm beginning to sound like an old maid already...actually I have a lot of other self help books on the shelves, but these three are the ones that I really love. Maybe next time I should blog about self help books that doesn't really help. Till then, oh-I-really-need-to-shower-and-sleep. Good nite!!

P/S: Going house hunting on Saturday, yeay!

laman web cari jodoh

Barulah rasa nak appreciate manusia-manusia normal sekeliling kita. But it's an interesting way to meet people out of your circle though. Just bear in mind kat dalam tu banyak weirdo. Haha now I'm speaking in rhymes.

Adalah hamba Allah ni, saja ngetest-ngetest join website ni, out of curiosity.

Yang lain-lain tu pulak, walaupun tak dibalas pesanan diorang, still boleh tengok the details and gambar. Wajib letak semua tu kalau nak tengok orang lain punya details and gambar kat website nih... so, cuba bayangkan pada suatu hari tu, masa pergi meeting, hamba Allah tu terjumpa dengan salah seorang makhluk Allah yang menggatal nak berkenalan dengan dia, dan orang tu pulak adalah one of the bosses that she needs to always give feedback to. Sengal kan?

A List for the New Life

Workload most of the time la...keluar dari opis pun dah nak pukul 7...and after work keluar jumpa kawan-kawan. I really, really wish I can see my other friends yang dah lama giler tak jumpa, but since I'm car-less here, I just sell my soul to the highest bidder...ha ha.

But seriously, banyak giler kerja sekarang ni....really wish I'm in Miri office right now...with all its distraction; kawan-kawan yang ajak mengumpat, ajak curi makanan orang kat 3rd floor, ajak makan custard bun after work...bengong..but I guess I will have to get used to this new chapter of my life, eventually.

tak cukup dengan itu, my 2 bosses asyik menelepon silih berganti asking me to make up my mind and agree with either one of them....adoiii...all I wanna do is just work, ni selang sehari call berkicau kat telinga aku apasal... hidup ini memang harus memilih, I'll make my choice eventually, but right now all I can do is just give diplomatic answers.

Anyway, tadi sempat buat senarai barang-barang yang perlu ada untuk survive my new life:

Kad "Touch n Go"

now I have to go back and forth my three offices, I need it, tak larat setiap kali pun nak beratur beli tiket. Bought one today.

A pair of sturdy, trendy flats:
nanti nak kena jalan turun naik bukit untuk ke stesen LRT, pastu kena berdiri kat dalam LRT, pastu kena jalan ke hulu ke hilir yarabi...so, merana la kalo memanjang pakai kasut tinggi....my solution would be to keep a pair of high heels in the office for whenever I need that "extra inches of confidence", then to get flat shoes/sandals that I can wear with any outfit and for all occasions....no idea what to buy yet, but I think I will know when I see it..

Minyak Wangi

kadang-kadang rasa macam menjadi busuk semula di dalam LRT...saja nak beli satu simpan dalam handbeg to keep me smelling fresh. huhu

Umbrella...ella ella
penting untuk cuaca yang tak menentu and since I'll be walking a lot..nak beli yang rupa cam botol air ni for easy storage

Coffee Mug
I'm not a coffee person, but I'm soooo in love with the coffee at the building's canteen..but since it's not fancy like Starbucks, etc. whenever I ordered it to be taken away, they put it in a paper cup that is not really heat resistance...I ended up scalding myself the other day and now I'm scarred for life. :(
And I will save 40 cents by bringing my own mug.

I-pad
saja mengada nak letak dalam list, sebab nak i-phone, but I know I won't use it anyway sebab skrin tak cukup besar untuk main games, internet or whatnot...laptop sekarang dah 4 tahun dah umur dia... and this is part of the motivation untuk bekerja keras dan bersabar. ;P

Bag
a bag sturdy and strong enough to hold all of the above...pun tak tau nak beli apa...but I would prefer something like this la...not a big fan of monogrammed bags..

hopefully, everything will go well...(Amiin)

How to be Lonely

First time loners? Or alone much? Read this.
Got this from Miss F's friend's blog:

If you are at first lonely, be patient. If you've not been alone much, or if when you were, you weren't okay with it, then just wait. You'll find it's fine to be alone once you're embracing it.

We could start with the acceptable places, the bathroom, the coffee shop, the library. Where you can stall and read the paper, where you can get your caffeine fix and sit and stay there. Where you can browse the stacks and smell the books. You're not supposed to talk much anyway so it's safe there.

There's also the gym. If you're shy you could hang out with yourself in mirrors, you could put headphones in (guitar stroke).

And there's public transportation, because we all gotta go places.

And there's prayer and meditation. No one will think less if you're hanging with your breath seeking peace and salvation.

Start simple. Things you may have previously (electric guitar plucking) based on your avoid being alone principals.

The lunch counter. Where you will be surrounded by chow-downers. Employees who only have an hour and their spouses work across town and so they -- like you -- will be alone.

Resist the urge to hang out with your cell phone.

When you are comfortable with eat lunch and run, take yourself out for dinner. A restaurant with linen and silverware. You're no less intriguing a person when you're eating solo dessert to cleaning the whipped cream from the dish with your finger. In fact some people at full tables will wish they were where you were.
Go to the movies. Where it is dark and soothing. Alone in your seat amidst a fleeting community.

And then, take yourself out dancing to a club where no one knows you. Stand on the outside of the floor till the lights convince you more and more and the music shows you. Dance like no one's watching...because, they're probably not. And, if they are, assume it is with best of human intentions. The way bodies move genuinely to beats is, after all, gorgeous and affecting. Dance until you're sweating, and beads of perspiration remind you of life's best things, down your back like a brook of blessings.

Go to the woods alone, and the trees and squirrels will watch for you.

Go to an unfamiliar city, roam the streets, there're always statues to talk to and benches made for sitting give strangers a shared existence if only for a minute and these moments can be so uplifting and the conversations you get in by sitting alone on benches might've never happened had you not been there by yourself

Society is afraid of alonedom, like lonely hearts are wasting away in basements, like people must have problems if, after a while, nobody is dating them. but lonely is a freedom that breaths easy and weightless and lonely is healing if you make it.

You could stand, swathed by groups and mobs or hold hands with your partner, look both further and farther for the endless quest for company. But no one's in your head and by the time you translate your thoughts, some essence of them may be lost or perhaps it is just kept.

Perhaps in the interest of loving oneself, perhaps all those sappy slogans from preschool over to high school's groaning were tokens for holding the lonely at bay. Cuz if you're happy in your head than solitude is blessed and alone is okay.

It's okay if no one believes like you. All experience is unique, no one has the same synapses, can't think like you, for this be releived, keeps things interesting lifes magic things in reach.

And it doesn't mean you're not connected, that communitie's not present, just take the perspective you get from being one person in one head and feel the effects of it. take silence and respect it. if you have an art that needs a practice, stop neglecting it. if your family doesn't get you, or religious sect is not meant for you, don't obsess about it.

You could be in an instant surrounded if you needed it.

If your heart is bleeding make the best of it

There is heat in freezing, be a testament.

BB Cream vs That Gal

using Benefit's "That Gal" masa majlis Ern kat Muar

using Skinfood's Peach Sake BB Cream #2 masa gi Ern nye majlis kat KK

nampak tak the difference? both pics were taken ~4 hours after application and masa panas terik.

That Gal aku sudah habis, so....

it took me a month actually before I decided to buy "That Gal"...the justification was I need it for Raya and it's the only makeup item that I'm buying for Raya this year anyway....

so, bila dia habis, hati ini teragak-agak semula nak beli ke tidak....despite the rave reviews and the fact that I'm loving it....ia juga:

- mahal: RM129 for 11ml and it only lasted me for 2 months.
- midday muka saya akan mula berminyak
- because it is pink-based, during days when the weather is very hot, muka saya yang memang senang nak merah ni menjadi merah menyala lagi
- it doesn't really have SPF properties
- membazir je saya beli blusher sebab with "That Gal", I don't really need it anymore
- saya still kena tepek bedak Miyami saya tu lebih sebab coverage "That Gal" tak menyeluruh sangat...

So, since masa benda tu habis I kat Miri and minggu depan tu baru I pegi KL lagi....hati sudah tak senang duduk....so since pergi Skin Food to replenish my moisturiser, ternampakla benda ini:

Skinfood Peach Sake BB Cream

Sales assistant tu cuba-cuba sikit kan skin saya....and saya yang tengah mamai membeli dan bawa balik rumah dan pakai...so far, this is what I think of it (after 2 minggu lebih pakai):

- murah: RM44.90 for 30ml....even though susah nak kontrol volume yang keluar sekali picit, but I'm sure it will last more than 2 months
- muka lambat sikit nak berminyak, but it's not easily washed-off by water macam That Gal...kena guna facial wash jugak
- yellow-based and it only come in 2 tones; fair and natural. I pakai natural punye. Yang fair tu kalau cina bolehla pakai.
- SPF20 uols!
- boleh pakai blusher pada hari-hari menggatal
- dia tak tebal, but then kalau tak payah tepek bedak pun takpe....I still letak bedak sikit² kat T-Zone though

for reviews pasal BB Cream ni, sila pergi sini ---> CLICK

I'll post my photos for you to see the difference la between pakai "That Gal" ngan Skinfood BB Cream ok...sekarang tengah ada sikit problem mau upload.

*NOTE: BB Cream stands for Blemish Balm Cream

13 things to unload...

There’s so many things in the last few days that I want to write about…but everytime I wrote about it, I will stop halfway then never got to finish the post…hence, there’s a lot of unfinished drafts…maybe I’ll just write it in point forms.

1. A friend/colleague of mine lost her 6 months’ old baby last week. She’s my age. I know how devastated she must have felt. Inilah ketentuan Allah, to each and everyone of us akan didatangkan ujian untuk meningkatkan keimanan kita. I pray Allah gives her the strength to be strong. (For me, antara benda paling pedih dalam dunia ni is for parents to bury their child).

2. It’s already half of Ramadhan….I don’t think spiritually I’m doing any better than last year. In fact, I think I’m getting sloppier in almost all aspects of life.

3. Standard time to arrive at office nowadays is at 8.30am. Ni semua kes tidur balik after sahur punya pasal (bulan tak puasa datang pukul 8.00 – 8.15am :-P ). So, getting a decent (not so far) parking spot is such a challenge. Have to settle for whichever parking lot that I first found.

4. Thank God in love I don’t use the same approach

"that gal"

baru sampai rumah, kemas-kemas barang untuk esok, basuh baju tapi nak jugak update blog sebab excited...I just bought this and used it today, and I feel amazing! even my friend pun cakap mekap aku cantik hari ni (padahal bukannya pakai apa sangat pun....as usual, no blusher for me)....

ta-da...new addition to my make-up collection....

it took me a month before I finally made up my mind to buy it....but it's really worth it.....hehehehe, ketinggalan zaman je aku ni, orang lain dah lama kot pakai....what I can say is benda ni memang best....meh aku copy and paste dia punya review yang aku google:

It’s a silky pink primer with light reflecting pigments to brighten the complexion, and it comes in an interesting glue-stick like container. You click the base, dispensing the product out of the vent at the top. A few clicks is enough to do my entire face.

Why I like it

I see a huge difference when I use this stuff. It…
  • visibly brightens my skin,
  • makes my complexion appear more even and smooth,
  • helps keep my skin hydrated throughout the day,
  • helps my makeup stay put, and
  • makes my foundation go on a lot smoother.

OKla.....good nite...**yawwwnn***

on my bedside...

Currently reading this. Am in the mood of self reflection right now, so Paulo Coelho's is the best.

"How can we be so arrogant? The planet is, was, and always will be stronger than us. We can't destroy it; if we overstep the mark, the planet will simply erase us from its surface and carry on existing. Why don't they start talking about not letting the planet destroy us? "

"Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, and there is nothing new under the sun, as Solomon said more than three thousand years ago.”

"At the first sign of indifference or lack of enthusiasm, take note! The only preventative against this disease is the realization that the soul suffers, suffers greatly, when we force it to live superficially. The soul loves all things beautiful and deep.”

“A very great difference indeed. Experience has taught me that people only give value to a thing if they have, at some point, been uncertain as to whether or not they’ll get it.”

"The celebrity syndrome. When people forget who they are and start to believe what other people say about them. The superclass, everyone’s dream, a world without shadows or darkness, where yes is the only possible answer to any request.”

“The fear of the unknown becomes a dread that she might never have the chance to discover what it really means to be here… how can she make sure that the miracle of today continues tomorrow?"

the reviews that I read is not really promising, but this is one of the few Paulo Coelho's books that I think I will finish reading (I only read about 70 pages of 'The Zahir' because it feels like listening to a biology lecture....)

bed is calling me. gonna read a few pages before I zzzz....tomorrow is a brand new day. good nite.

Pak Jamil & Makeup

So, Pak Jamil decided to drag me along to the meeting, even though I have not finished the work that he asked me to do (I still have to prepare a couple of slides though)....

Just after I sent an email to book my flight and accommodation for the one day meeting, the lead for the other project I'm working on asked me to go to KL for a one-week workshop. I can only go for 3 days only though, since I'm taking Thursday & Friday off coz my sis' wedding will be on that weekend! He said OK.

I will still keep my end of the promise though to finish my report. Which means I only have until Saturday to do what I need to do since I'll be flying back to Kuching from KL....Aghhh! Need to fast forward my facial session la nampaknye, I have some big zits popping due to lack of sleep and hormones..

After work, I went to Bintang with Zuma to buy this:

The colours that I chose are similar to those in the picture except for the green one... they're a good addition to the eye and cheek colours that I already have. And at RM18 each (and if you buy 3 free 1 pulak tu) it's really a good deal. The pallete box is also on promotion, 40% off with any purchase. Zuma bought a lipstick for RM18 as well and I added a liquid concealer to my loot coz it's also RM18. Please take note that some of the colours might already be out of stock now (yelah, jualan murah mestila orang berebut nak beli).

Anyway, I didn't get the free canvas makeup bag like my friends got, coz the offer is only until last weekend. Bukan rezeki. The slanted blusher brush in Stage costs RM90, so I just bought a similar brush from Elianto. RM13 je, murah kan? But of course, the feel and the look of it really looks like the difference between RM90 and RM13. Takpela...I really have to watch my budget until next year anyway dan bukannya pakai selalu pun.

Oklah...have to wash this make up off my face. Macam-macam sales girl tu test kat muka aku tadi. Hajat di hati nak spend 10 minit, jadi sejam kat situ. Good nite.

Toner: Skin Food Parsley & Mandarin Toner

Serum / Essence: Skin Food Parsley & Mandarin Essence, Skin Food Peach Sake Pore Minimising Essence

(with muka kertas pasir macam aku ni, I need some professional help).

*The Skin Food Tea Tree Range & Parsley and Mandarin Range are great for problem/acne-prone skin. Another best-selling product from Skin Food is also their tinted BB cream (sunblock, tapi I tak pakai this one, coz tak main panas sangat, sekali sekala gelap apa salahnya).

Eye-Liner : Stage eye-liner in black. Easy to apply and remove.

Mascara: For biasa-biasa use, the telescopic mascara from L'oreal.....for volume, Hypnose from Lancome (dapat free, adik saya kasi).... kalau rajin, kepitla dulu bulu mata sebelum apply mascara.

Can’t live without: The three essentials – cleanser, toner, moisturizer. (Kalau tak mandi takpe, asal muka aku mandi). So, to those who wants to share their beauty regime, sila kan lah ye....

P/S: I'm currently trying to learn some make-up tips & tricks coz my sister asked me to beautify her during her 'majlis bertandang'....adoiyaiiii.....

entry gedik

Ini gambar gedik saya. Kalau saya letak kat facebook, nanti confirm kena kutuk dengan sahabat-sahabat karib la kan...

Masa hari tu, saya first time pakai tudung ni, so sajalah nak meng-camwhore sebelum pegi kerja.... sebenarnya saya nak share about how my skin has improved dalam masa setahun ni....those who knows me, will know that I'm forever in love-hate relationship relationship with my skin....ada satu peringkat tu, teruk gila my skin condition sampai ada sorang makcik-tak-sayang-mulut suruh saya gosok muka dengan kertas pasir (nasib baik saya sabar). Sekarang ni pun, still tumbuh jerawat tapi kalau saya tgh stress, tak cukup tido, malas mandi and if it's the time of the month la....which I usually biarkan sahaja jerawat tu keluar.

So, nak tahu what have I been using as part of my skincare and beauty regime? (wahsehhh)...nanti-nantila ek, saya story. TUNGGU....

P/S: Siti Yuhanis and Farina, rindula nak baca korang punya beauty product nye reviews...

Karipap-Karipap Cinta

I just got back from another weekend in Kuching....yeah, I went back for 2 straight weekends...since everyone is there and the next time I'll be back is at the end of June...so, why not?

My uncle and his family spent some time with us over the weekend. Zhafri stayed the whole weekend in our house to play video games with Adin. It's so nice to see my uncle, aunt and my cousins happy, even though I know deep down in their hearts they really, really miss Zharif.

When they came to my house to pick up Zhafri, the girls and my aunt were very excited to tell me their latest news.

"Kak Long, Kak Long, kitorang beli buku cerita baru!"

"Oh yeah...buku apa?"

"Karipap-Karipap Cinta."

"Hahahaha....bestnya title.Best ke buku tu?"

"Tak baca lagi. Ada kat rumah. Kitorang beli sebab muka girl dekat cover buku tu macam Kak Long."

"Hmmmmm.....harus kucari buku itu."

So, as soon as I reached Miri, I googled the book. Apparently, it's quite popular....they're printing the 3rd edition in less than a month and a proposal of turning it into a movie is currently in progress....but, the likeness of the covergirl and me? I'll let you people see for yourself. One thing for sure....I think one of us needs to lose the double chin. Hehehehehe

of pick up lines...

"Does it hurt...when you fall from the skies? Coz only angels can shine the way like you do." Bleargghhh...

Pos Rahsia

I had a meeting on Monday to review my work in progress with our stakeholder in KL (note to self: sila kontrol perasaan dan jangan buat muka walaupun orang tanya soalan yang tak relevan dan dengan cara yang kurang sopan). Got the chance to catch up with my housemates masa kat UM and my friend who just came back from UK for good. Planned to go shopping, but I guess hilang selera shopping sebab penat sangat... bought a few books (5) from Borders and Kinokuniya...

2 of them are these:

Post Secret is a community project founded by Frank Warren. It allows people to share their secret anonymously and creatively on a postcard. (for more info, korang google jelah)....it turns out to inspire others and help people emotionally....coz I think it makes people feel that they're not alone in this world, and provides an escape from secrets that are burdening them....so far ada 5 books, I only bought 2 sebab (a) berat nak bawak balik, (b) mahal.

Most of the secrets are just written in short words and with graphics. I chose the wordi-est one to share here.

This SMS conversation was with somebody that I've known since primary school. He's trying to get me to 'lepak' with his crowd, which he said is more productive coz they lepak and talk business.

R: Kitak polah apa hujung minggu tok? Jomla lepak dengan kamek orang. Ada barbecue, nangga wayang, main boling.

Me: Nangga la dolok mun sik ada apa-apa program.

R: Apa salahnya lepak dengan kamek orang....sikkanla asyik-asyik dengan geng-geng kitak jak...at least lepak ngan kamek orang ada faedahnya juak...

Me: Hmmm, sebenarnya kamek lebih suka melepak dengan kawan-kawan yang melepak dengan kamek because they genuinely enjoy my company and care about me.

R: Jadi, kamek sik termasuk dalam golongan ya lah?

Me: Kitak pikirla dirik pun.

This one pulak, via MSN, this guy works in the same company as me, but across the border. Aku pun tak tau kenapa dia berminat nak kenal ngan aku, tapi chatting jela kalau ada masa. Pagi tadi, dia MSN lagi..

O: Hujung minggu tok kamek maok pegi Miri? Kitak keja kah?

Me: Sik.

O: Apa polah biasanya? Sikkan duduk rumah jak?

corner punya corner punya corner....rupanya, mamat ni nak ajak aku keluar...ek eleh...
then dia tanya lagi...

Me: kamek berat dan sik berapa tinggi...why is that important?

Me: sorry, I'll just say whatever crosses my mind

1. Know your self worth and please draw a line on how people should treat u.

2. Don't let anybody (even yourself) mess with your self-esteem....it took me years to get over my low self esteem (I couldn't look at myself in the mirror halfway thru high school because I think I have bad acne problem, I know how it feels)

3. It feels really great to zass people....especially this kind of people...nothing to lose what...they're not even my real friends
